No win for Labor on tax
 
LABOR'S hope that the "lived experience" of its carbon tax would smash Tony Abbott's political credibility has failed to materialise.

The first Newspoll to be conducted since the introduction of the carbon tax on July 1 has shown virtually no change in Labor's standing with voters. The poll conducted for The Australian at the weekend found the Coalition's primary support had risen two points to 48 per cent as Labor's primary vote increased just one percentage point to 31 per cent, despite the government dishing out millions of dollars in carbon tax compensation (Oz).

Environment Minister Tony Burke said this morning it was unreasonable to expect support for Labor to have increased in such a short period of time. "You can't expect a year of fear campaign from Tony Abbott to be matched by one week of lived experience," he told ABC radio.

The stoush between Labor and the Greens continues with senior Left factional leaders backing calls for the party to take a tougher line against its partners in minority government (Oz), (Age), (Fin Review).

Asylum-seekers and the Coalition's policy to turn around Australia-bound vessels at sea also remains high on the agenda. Tony Abbott has formally refused to take part in a multi-party committee tasked with solving the current political impasse ( Daily Tele). He also said he would turn back asylum-seeker boats at sea with or without Indonesia's permission (SMH).
